They’re messy, and a huge pain in the ass to mail out, but I can’t help but love printmaking on so many levels.
Initially, I was turned on by the product, images that look so stark and raw, with threads of wood grain throughout, I had to try my hand at it right away.. Turns out, I dig the process even more than the results!
There’s really nothing like the smell of a freshly cut woodblock, and ink filling the workspace, and the sounds! Rolling a brayer through tacky ink, *kshnk kshnk (it kinda sounds like that) trust me, it’s really satisfying.
Besides self gratification, I dig prints for the fact that they are physical, handmade artifacts in an otherwise digital world that our friends can hold on to, knowing we made them ourselves out of appreciation for them.
The first 50 people who pick up our EP get a limited edition print. A little gift of prettiness covered in sweat from us to you.
After two years of tirelessly working on the perfect “sound”, finding the right people to help us realize said sound, and recording four songs we felt were the best example of what we’re all about.. We did it. We have an EP that is truly US. Maybe we’re perfectionists, but we’re happy.
After recording our first single Uncle Andrei on Third Man Records in 2010, we starting to do some thinking. It became clear to us that we had always intended to be more than a two piece. So set about learning how to be a band. What came in the following months was an exciting, and often frustrating series of try outs, brainstorming sessions, let downs, and moments of profound self realization. Fast forward a couple of years, and here we are, working with some finest musicians either of us has ever had the pleasure to know, and truly proud to stand behind our art.
The Thornbills EP is an introduction to things to come. We found a way to put our wildly diverse yet unified experiences together seamlessly with the help of a great band, and a sympathetic producer. We hope you like it as much as we do.
